College Greenlight: College Fly-In & Diversity Programs for 2016

One of the most important factors is in deciding if a college is right for you is whether or not you can picture yourself as a member of campus and for many students this means a campus visit.  If the college isn’t nearby, however, being able to make the visit might not be possible due to financial limitations.  The good news is that a number of institutions offer free fly-in programs, travel assistance scholarships, overnight programs, and diversity programming that comes at little or no cost to students accepted to their programs.

The State University of New York's 2016 Spring College Fairs are just a few weeks away!  We hope your juniors and their families will attend.

The Marist Summer Pre-College Programs provide rising high school juniors and seniors the opportunity to take a course in a field they are passionate about while getting a taste of college life. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to get a head start in college by earning credit and living at Marit's campuses in Poughkeepsie, NY and/or Florence, Italy.

New York Sports Connection, the hub for youth sports information in New York City, will award top prizes of up to $500 (in cash and/or other prizes) to the the best original, never-before-published essays that promote sportsmanship and fair play in several age groups! We're asking students to pledge their #collegiance by May 9 with an original and creative Instagram video for a chance to win a $5,000 grand prize or one of 11 other cash prizes. Submissions will be judged on creativity, enthusiasm, and overall quality by film and media professors from College Board member institutions.

Sigma Nu Zeta Chapter’s Achiever Scholarship: This one-time $2,000 scholarship is available to one talented female high school senior who represents an underserved community of color and who either attends a high school in Harlem or lives in Harlem.

The Lori C. Pemberton Memorial Scholarship: This $1,000 scholarship is awarded annually over two years for the student’s freshman year and again in his or her sophomore year (for a total of $2,000) if he or she remains in good standing. This scholarship is available to one talented high school senior (female or male) who lives in New York City and represents an underserved community of color. This scholarship honors the legacy of Lori C. Pemberton, a founding board member of the Five Pearls Foundation and a lifelong member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority. Her legacy is one of commitment to service and making a positive impact on the lives of others, especially our youth.

The program awards multiple, one-time grants of $4,000 each, to be used toward tuition costs at any of CUNY’s 17 undergraduate colleges. Scholarships are not limited to a specific field of study, but require full-time enrollment in either an associates or baccalaureate degree program. Winners must provide proof of fall enrollment at CUNY and commit to participating in at least one community service project during their freshman year. To apply, high school seniors must have completed at least 50 hours of service in their community and/or school in the past twelve months. APPLY HERE.

The Whitney M. Young, Jr. Scholarship Program offers scholarship awards  available through the New York Urban League and is named after Whitney M. Young, Jr., who was the Executive Director of the National Urban League from 1961 to 1971. Young focused on gaining equality for blacks in business and politics, and improving opportunities for the urban poor. The Whitney M. Young, Jr. Scholarship of $3,500, memorializing Young’s commitment to educational equity for young people. The Young Professional’s Emerging Leader Scholarship, which provides awards of $1,500 to empower outstanding students, and the NYUL Incentive Scholarship of $1,500 to support inspiring students embarking in their post-secondary journey.

The Student-View Scholarship is a unique opportunity for high school seniors. It is open to all students regardless of academic achievement or financial need.


Simply complete a 15-25 minute online survey about local colleges. You will then be automatically entered into a random drawing for a scholarship award.

        Carey Gabay Memorial Scholarship

The Carey Gabay Scholarship Program will annually award full-ride scholarships to five students to attend State University of New York State-operated campus beginning in the 2016-17 school year. These scholarships will cover all costs of attendance, including tuition, room and board, college fees, books and supplies, and transportation and personal expenses. These awards will be targeted to students who – like Carey – achieved academic excellence despite an economically disadvantaged background.

Offered under the Embrace Her Legacy framework, our Made to Succeed Saturday's program is a co-curricular program offered to success-oriented, high school girls (ages 14-18) in the New York City area. It is a learning series whose focal point is the overall well-being, self empowerment, personal and leadership development and professional success of young woman.
